How often should I be c-betting AK, after I 3bet and whiff

So just as a pretty general question, say that you are in position, a TAGish players opens in MP and you 3bet and he calls. Now the flop comes down 955, or whatever, and he checks it to you. What is the best line to take here? Are you guys almost always cbetting? How often do you check behind, and then what do you do to a 1/2 pot to 3/4 pot bet on a blank turn?

When you do c-bet what do you usually do after that, just give up? Or do you ever continue and fire out another barrel on maybe a J or Q turn? I find myself just getting consistently owned in this spot, cause every time I bet I'm never folding out better hands, and then when I double barrel a scary turn, and he ships it over the top and I am getting like 4.5/1 on a call and just want to shoot myself in the head. So I'm realized that one of my biggest leaks in playing AK in 3bet pots, so you guys have to help me!!!

  1. A tagish player I assume would be flat calling the 3bet with something like
pocket pairs broadway and maybe suited conenctors (villain dependant). Based on the range of hands we are expected to be 3betting (High PP and AK) I would cbet this flop texture all day to represent large PP. If he calls I am shutting down since it is apparent he will have pocket pairs that he may be unwilling to fold. I think it is spew to double barrel a 955 flop in a 3bet pot after you cbet is called on the flop and you miss on the turn. You are placing your self in a world on hurt on that turn. Double barrel a scary turn? Most of the scary turn cards most likely improve his hand on this flop texture since he will call with 99+. Do you think he will fold that range even on a blank turn?

  2. I probably get owned a lot in this spot too. That being said, I'm very often c-betting a dry board like the one you posted. Villains will pretty much have 2 high cards (all of which you beat) and small-mid pocket pairs (pp's). Most villains will fold some of their pp's and most of their high cards, so c-betting should be profitable.

I think the main thing is to watch out for the type of player you are c-betting against. Don't do it vs players who will never fold any pair and are passive. I think you can c-bet vs tight players who are likely to be set-mining, but if they call the flop I think you have to mostly shut down. Against solid regs, I usually just try to check it down.

Also, I usually only bet about 1/2 pot on dry flops after c-betting, whether I hit or not. I think most villains have already made up their mind about what they are doing on the flop, so if they are folding you don't have to bet much. If you hit your hand and decide you want to get stacks in, a 1/2 pot bet on the flop should still easily allow you to get stacks in by the river. I've also found that betting small induces some spazz raises from aggro players. It's always fun when you bet 1/2 pot on the flop with a big hand and some spew-tard spams his stack in with nothing.

I don't know if I'm right about much of this, but it makes sense to me. This is an interesting topic that demands some more research.

  3. BTW, I do like the delayed c-bet after the flop gets checked. If you are in position and get checked to twice, your opponent very often has a weak hand. Betting a small amount will protect against hands like QJ that have 6 outs, and might even get some marginal paired hands to fold.

You might even barrel the turn and river, in which case you will fold out some marginal 1-pair hands that got stubborn on the turn.

  4. Yea I think I might like the delayed C-bet here most. Because it seems that when we look at the villains range, there just isn't any point in betting a flop like that, unless we think they will fold like 66 or 77 which is probably somewhat unlikely.

The rest of his range consists of high cards, all of which we beat, and if we hit we might get stacks in. So there is not point in betting to try to get these hands to fold, especially if we have position.

Les I'm wondering what your thoughts are, how often are you 3betting AK is this spot, and what determines if you are going to 3bet. Then how do you proceed on the flop if you miss?
